It isn’t a new concept to create TV shows based upon books. Showtime has done it with Dexter, HBO has Game of Thrones and True Blood, CBS has Under the Dome, and there are countless more. For the upcoming 2013 Fall TV show season there are plenty of new TV shows based upon books. The primetime networks; CBS, Fox, NBC, and ABC all have new series premiering within the fall or midseason. Two other popular networks; The CW and Lifetime also have new series based on books.
Today we look at ABC:
ABC network has several new shows for fall. Their first show is titled Resurrection, an adaptation of Jason Mott’s just released novel The Returned. The premise of the show is about what happens when all the loved ones you’ve lost and mourned suddenly return back to life and to you. It will feature notable actors such as Omar Epps (House) and Samaire Armstrong (Entourage, The O.C.). Originally it was going to be a fall premiere show but will be bumped to a midseason premiere, premiering on Sunday March 9th at 10PM. Their second new show is a spinoff of their popular series Once Upon a Time. This new show is titled Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. It is an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The plot follows Alice, a young English girl, after her adventures in Wonderland. Once Upon a Time it will feature well known characters from other fairy tales and fables. It is unknown if any of the characters from Once upon a Time will appear in the spinoff. The cast of this show includes Sophie Lowe (Blame) as Alice, Naveen Andrews (Lost) as Jafar, and Jonathan Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) as The White Rabbit. Another show airing this fall is Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., unlike the other premiering shows, this show is based upon Marvel comics. The show follows Agent Phil Coulson, known from the Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers movies, and his fellow agents of the international law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. It is the first television series for Marvel and is from executive producer Joss Whedon (Buffy, Dollhouse) who wrote and directed The Avengers. The show has cast Clark Gregg (Iron Man, Avengers) reprising his role as agent Phil Coulson, and Ming-Na Wen (Mulan), newcomer Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennett (Nashville), Iain De Caestecker (16 Years of Alcohol), and Elizabeth Henstridge (The Thompsons) as his agents. The show will premiere Tuesday September 24th at 8PM. The Returned by Jason Mott and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll can be found in the library. Mott’s book can be found on the 2nd floor in the new fiction section and Carroll’s book can be found in the children’s section on the main floor. The library does not carry any comic books but graphic novels containing the Marvel characters can be found in the children’s section on the main floor and the young adult section on the 3rd floor. There is also non-fiction material on the company and the Marvel universe on the 3rd floor.
