Dandelion Wine

Do you have a summer ritual? Is it the first s’mores on the grill or flowers blooming in the garden or that day when the ocean water feels refreshing instead of bracing? Or is it making dandelion wine?

When I heard that Ray Bradbury died, I realized that I had been missing my ritual for the beginning of  summer. When I was young teenager, I had found a copy of his novel, Dandelion Wine, in my father’s bookcase.  I read it that summer and every summer for many years. It was my way to welcome summer.

If you only know Bradbury as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, this book will come as a delightful surprise. It is a coming-of age story. It is a nostalgic look at life in a small Midwest town in the early 20th century. It is a celebration of life.

No, I never made dandelion wine. But I just reread the book and found it as delightful as ever. You might enjoy it as you lounge on the beach, sit beneath a shady tree or even wait in the airport.

Author Visit: Susan Henderson

Long Island author Susan Henderson will join us on Monday June 4, 2012 at 7 PM to discuss her debut novel Up From the Blue and the writer’s life.  Susan Henderson is a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee and the recipient of an Academy of American Poets award.

“Tillie Harris’s life is in disarray- her husband is away on business, the boxes in her new home aren’t unpacked, and the telephone isn’t even connected yet. Though she’s not due for another month, sudden labor pains force Tillie to reach out to her estranged father for help, a choice that means facing the painful memories she’s been running from since she was a little girl. An extraordinary debut from a talented new voice, Up from the Blue untangles the year in Tillie’s life that changed everything: 1975, the year her mother disappeared.” (From the Publisher)

Currently in its 4th printing, Up From the Blue received a starred reviewed from Publishers Weekly, calling the novel  “an elegant debut.”  Library Journal notes “rapturous prose,” while Booklist claims it is “an affecting portrait.”

Copies of the book will be sold by the Friends of the Library at the event.

For more information on Susan Henderson, visit the author’s official website.

National Novel Writing Month

Have you thought you could write the next great novel?  Well, here is a challenge.  November is National Novel Writing Month.   This is the deal:  on November 1 you start writing with the goal of 50,000 words (about 175 pages) by the end of the day November 30.  It is all about quantity!  Just write and write and write to meet the word count.  The sponsors of NaNoWriMo encourage this non-quality aspect of writing to allow people to set down on paper (or screen) their ideas without the need to tweak and polish every word, every sentence.

Intrigued?  Check out the homepage.  You can register and then keep track of your word count.  You can get pep talks from other writers and find forums with helpful advice.  And you can find Long Island locations for writers.

What happens at the end of the month?  Last year there were 200,530 participants worldwide and 37,479 completed the challenge.  The participants’ word count totaled 2,87,682,109 words!

Need more encouragement?  Authors  Sara Gruen, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, and Tammy Greewood all started books during NaNo and had those books published!

So grab a handful of sharp pencils and a yellow legal pad or flex your fingers over the keyboard. The race is about to begin…

Harry Bernstein (May 30, 1910 – June 3, 2011)

It is my sad duty to report that Harry Bernstein the author of one of my favorite books of the last few years The Invisible Wall passed away on June 3.  If you haven’t yet had a chance to read it I highly recomend doing so.  The Invisible Wall is a memoir, published when Mr. Bernstein was 96 years old, of his early life growing up in a lower class English neighborhood around the time of World War I.  It’s the story of a street where Jews lived on one side and Christians lived on the other, and the invisible wall that separated the two.  It’s also about the war and a love and other events that would, temporarily, bring down that wall.

After writing The Invisible Wall Mr. Bernstein went on to write The Dream and The Golden Willow (an homage to his wife and the love of his life.)
